For Hadasa Cytrynowicz, "home" has been a contested terrain. Born in Lodz, Poland in 1935, she fled with her family from the 1939 Nazi invasion and spent her early childhood in the Soviet Union. By age 10, her home was a UN Displaced Persons Camp. At 14, she was living in the new State of Israel; at 19, she settled with her new husband Tsvi in Sao Paulo, Brazil; toeday she lives in Los Angeles.
Despite a childhood of exile, privation, and catastrophic loss, Hadasa has lived with a strong sense of family solidarity and a powerful Jewish humanistic spirit, both of which shine through these autobiographical sketches and stories.
Translated from the Portuguese by Eric Gordon.
